Rowgirls.com-41-1024x680Rowing the Atlantic

I will be joining a team of 8 to row across the Atlantic in February 2014.  We will aim to beat the current world record.

The current world speed record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic ocean from the Canary Islands to Barbados is held by Sara G with a crossing time of 32 days.

By crossing at a speed of less than 32 days, the team will be able to claim the coveted ‘Blue Riband’ trophy for the Atlantic Rowing Speed Record. Many crews have attempted to break this record, but only 4 teams have set new crossing times since 1992!

We will be rowing in Titan which is the lightest and most advanced ocean rowing boat ever built. The design principle is to take the lightest possible materials and structure, increase the amount of power in the form of rowing positions and rowers, analyse every item of kit, equipment and food going on board in terms of weight to create an overall campaign boat no heavier in total than the existing record holding boat but at the same time increase the level of physical power on-board.

The Boat

Titan-sideThe boat design has been developed after a number of ocean crossings. The speed campaign boats have fallen into two main groups – large, heavier (rowed – single oar) or lightweight (sculling – double oar) boats. La Mondiale (the original record holder) was a larger type of vessel, and viewed to be the worlds fastest ocean rowing boat. Then a series of smaller boats attempted to go faster than her, including Orca, Oystershack and Atlantic Quest.

In 2009, Woodvale built a large boat in an attempt to replicate the speeds achieved by La Mondiale. This boat was named Britannia III. After two successful Atlantic campaigns – albeit slower than La Mondiale – it was decided to go back to the drawing board to create a “middle option” rowing boat. The design of Titan was born!

Titan is quite simply the lightest and most advanced ocean rowing boat ever built.

The Build

  • A fully carbon constructed rowing shell with aircraft standard lightweight carbons laid over a 3mm high density foam core.
  • Fairing is reduced to the minimum in order to save filler weight.
  • Every nut, bolt, washer is titanium, nylon or aluminium.
  • Ocean hatches are replaced with custom-built carbon fibre hatches.
  • She benefits from having the latest B&G auto pilot H3000 linked by hydraulics to a balanced titanium rudder, all powered by custom made lithium iron batteries.
  • There is a lightweight off shore life raft built by Ocean Safety and twin carbon dagger boards.
  • We have developed her food programme with Fuzion Foods to save at least 25% on overall food weight.
  • To increase performance, she has 5 floodable sea water ballast tanks to maximize her self righting ability but also to allow fore and aft trimming.
  • As a bare boat, she weighs less than 200 kilos.
